Striking students of Alassane Ouattara University in Cote d’Ivoire’s central region of Bouake on Thursday blocked the Higher Education Minister Gnamien Konan who had visited the institution at a time when they were strike.

He arrived on the premises when students were demonstrating to demand improvement of their living condition and learning environment, a source at the A O university told Le Vrai Patriote.

Cowering, the minister was forced to hide in one of the university offices for hours, as angry students blocked all gates to the institution.

Until the evening on the same day, the minister was still being held up at the university. No one could really tell if negotiation took place with angry striking students.
Our source said some of the demands by the striking students included:

  1. a resumption of teaching by lecturers who are still on strike
  2. the disbursement of student loans
  3. the completion of the university’s rehabilitation program.
